Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will provide vision and leadership for the School's academic programs and services, expand programmatic options, and advance the School's commitment as an urban public-serving research university. The School provides academic programs in the areas of teaching and learning, educational leadership, counseling and special education, and foundations of education.
This position reports to the Dean and is a member of the School's senior leadership team that ensures integrity, quality, and transparency of academic programs, policies, and procedures that govern the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Collaborating with all sectors of the School to ensure efficient and effective operations, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs provides dynamic administrative leadership for all academic programs, works closely with department chairs and track coordinators, and helps ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
Position Responsibilities
* Provide leadership for academic program review
* Liaise with the VCU graduate school, VCU Office of Academic Affairs, and State Council of Higher Education in Virginia
* Provide leadership for all facets of the doctoral programs
* Supervise the School's Information Technology Service Office and Assessment Office
* Provide leadership in and oversight of the academic curriculum and course development
* Enhance academic program quality and review
* Assist with strategic planning
* Support the development of new programs and certificate opportunities including online programming
* Analyze and interpret institutional data
* Make recommendations for changes in policy or procedures that lead to overall improvement and quality enhancement
* Collaborate with the School's Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development, and Executive Director for Licensure and Accreditation to promote an environment of inclusive excellence, rich learning opportunities, and impactful research experiences for students
* Work with Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and other leadership at VCU to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
* Advocate for the School
Required Qualifications
* PhD or EdD in education or closely related field
* Strong record of increasingly responsible leadership within a school or college
* A desire to build a collaborative spirit within a school
* Strong interpersonal, analytic, written, and oral communication skills
* Experience working in a diverse higher education environment and a commitment to a culture of inclusion and diversity
* Ability to deal sensitively with confidential information and to ensure that the office maintains a high degree of professionalism and discretion
* Demonstrated experience in designing and leading new initiatives or programs to advance the mission of an academic department or school/college
* A record of professorial excellence (teaching, scholarship, and service) commensurate with the rank of full professor in one of the SOE's four departments
* Successful supervisory experience
* Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional services that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability
* Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member and senior leader in the School of Education and at VCU. Evidence of leadership effectiveness in higher education and/or professional academic organization
* Successful experience in an academic administrative position (e.g., department chair, program director, center director); evidence of being a creative thinker, and an appreciation of interdisciplinary research in an urban environment
Preferred Qualifications
* Evidence of service or leadership in national or international professional associations
* Experience developing innovative and entrepreneurial programs including online course offerings
* Experience with responsibility centered management (RCM) budget models and implementation
* Knowledge of the disciplines and programs represented in the School
* Experience in curriculum development
* Ability to interpret policies and apply regulations within given business practices and organizational structures
* A desire to work in a team-based, dynamic environment
* Experience in budget management, mentoring faculty, and supervising professional staff
