Our client

Within the wider business, Barings Alternative Investments (BAI) is one of the largest integrated alternative investment platforms globally with in excess of $50 billion AUM across real estate, real assets and private equity strategies.

Within the alternative platform the real estate business has more than $44 billion in AUM, while the direct and indirect private equity and real asset strategies have in excess of $8 billion in AUM. The real estate team invests in real estate debt and equity across all sectors, deploying core, value add and opportunistic capital in a range of strategies. While the private equity and real assets team is focused on equity investment across the risk spectrum. The BAI business has a mix of flagship funds and separately managed account client relationships.

Current situation & opportunity

The business is looking to hire a senior professional to oversee the management and development of strategic client relationships primarily in the North American market, but with a global perspective. While the role will cover the breadth of the BAI business, the focus will be on private equity and real assets. This is a key role in the growth and success of the BAI business with an emphasis on providing leadership, identifying and developing new strategic relationships with investors, developing investment solutions and promoting new product opportunities with strategic clients. This position will work closely with both the BAI investment teams and the global Barings sales and distribution team. This position will lead the development of new investment strategies and strategic opportunities with strategic relationships.

The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to influence and shape the firm s strategy in support of management s significant ambitions for the business. This person will be based at the Barings New York office, and will report to the Head of the Strategic Investment Capital.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development and management of strategic client relationships in North America
  • Responsible for the positioning of BAI capabilities with strategic investors, with a focus on private equity and real assets
  • Actively manage interactions between BAI investment teams and Barings global sales team relating to strategic clients
  • Play a key role in complex one-off transactions to acquire individual assets outside traditional fund structures
  • Actively originating potential transactions for the Barings investment teams
  • Actively participate in the development of new strategic products and services that will have appeal to strategic client relationships
  • Monitor investor trends, requirements and strategies so as to identify strategic investment product opportunities
  • Represent Barings with gravitas at industry events and organizations

Skills and experience required:

  • Experience originating and/or executing complex direct private equity and real asset transactions, this experience will most likely have been gained in a principal investment role, or possibly, an advisory role
  • Experience in raising capital for alternative investment products and services
  • A proven relationship builder with an existing network of contacts / investors in the North American market
  • Experience of marketing private equity funds and separate accounts in the North American market
  • A team oriented professional with experience working in a collaborative environment with respect to investing and/or raising and retaining capital
  • Strong verbal and written presentation skills to enable marketing of existing and new strategic opportunities to prospective investors and to secure capital commitments from strategic clients
  • High degree of independence, initiative, responsibility and accountability
  • Ability to work as an integral part of a team that includes other company departments and managers
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively
  • Strong client service focus and a high standard of professionalism and integrity
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet tight timelines
  • Ability to build relationships across all areas of the business and win support
